Congratulations to Australian diver Matthew Mitcham who gave the Chinese a stunning upset in the men’s 10 meter platform finals on Saturday night in Beijing. Matt was one of my favorites going into the 2008 Olympics, not just because he’s a cutie, but also because he was the only openly gay athlete competing.

I was watching the NBC coverage last night and it was amazing! It looked like the Chinese had the gold in te bag but then in the last round their lead diver made a tiny error that left the door open for Matt to take the gold… but only if he got an almost perfect dive. Well, just like a Hollywood ending he did just that, getting a perfect 10 from all the judges except one (the hold-out gave him a 9.5).

NBC never mentioned Matt’s sexuality during the coverage, but in Australia it’s pretty well known. Click on this link to watch a video clip of Matt talking about the win and thanking his mother and life partner (who looks pretty studly himself!)

Now we all have something to look forward to in 2012 when Matt continues his Olympic gold quest in London!

Congratualtions to the US male gymnastic team. OK, so they didn’t win gold but they were kind enough to pose for this hot photo after appearing on the Today show. For that they get a gold from me!
